frazadas

Wholesale and retail orders worldwide. We offer a very unique service where you get to choose from hundreds of frazadas. Please contact info@elhummingbird.com for more information.

Frazadas are exceptional pieces of textiles handwoven by the local artisans of the central Andes. The frazadas we sell are from Peru and are used as rugs, throws, bed coverings or wall hangings. el hummingbird also offers cushions and bags made from these incredible textiles.

Using the same techniques as countless generations before them, artesans take about a month to complete just one frazada. They are made with sheep's wool coloured with natural dyes which create thick and colourful pieces, each unique in colour and design.

Due to the time and effort required to create these incredible textiles and the rise of the mining industry in Peru, artesans are going in search of better sources of income to provide for their families and as a result the practice of weaving these textiles is in sharp decline. Frazadas and other traditional handmade products are therefore becoming more and more scarce.

Our aim is to ensure that this ancient tradition continues to be past down through the generations and that this beautiful expression of Peruvian and Andean culture has the opportunity to be showcased in people's homes around the world

We have a team in Peru that work directly with local artisans. Tell us what kind of frazada you would like and we will go out and try and match it as closely as possible for you. Send us photos or tell us what colours and styles you like and we will then send you photos of what we have found. Use the images advertised here to get an idea for colours and styles. Just send us an email with your request.

The frazadas we source are mainly from around Cuzco, 3,400 metres up in the Andean mountain range. The frazadas from this region have distinct characteristics and have a noticeable join in the middle. This join is used because the women who make them will only weave the textile as wide as their waist. They weave two and then join the halves together. This results in a range of sizes however they are usually around 1.5m x 1.5m up to 1.8m x 1.8m. Please note that they are not always a perfect square.
